Most of us entrepreneurs are very excited lot. We are passionate about our products or services. We would like to add value to our offerings based on our perception of market. But in the heat of excitement, we lose our sight of the scope of our venture and the product we are offering.
We start with modest ambitions, say to target just one city or a town with our product. We have well defined, well thought out plans. We proceed according to plan and start seeing the successes. Then somewhere we start losing focus. We start altering either our offerings or our plans that generate our products. Instead of targeting the city now we target the country. Instead of offering the main products, we start offering products + frills.
The end result is confused strategy and direction for both employees and customers. Our employees do not know if to promote more discounts or ‘buy one and get one free’ offer. Too frequent changes to the offering may result in chaos in our venture. They weaken and misdirect our offerings to customer and result in lower employee morale.
Our strategy should be consistent and our product offerings simple. We should always guard ourselves against inadvertent change of scope. If there is a need however, we should plan to address it effectively.
