It is very difficult to find a right employee for your business. Entrepreneur is often at a disadvantage because he does not have large money to pay to attract right talents. Due to this entrepreneurs are hamstrung. I have personally used some of the techniques to identify and retain right employees. Let us look at them.
- Look for the motivation
- Does his resume show too many jumps?
- Look for the right attitude
- Is he only looking for money?
- You will know your employee only on the long run
During the interview sessions, try to determine the real motivation behind the candidate. An ideal candidate would be looking for a great job and a decent salary. If a candidate is overly focused on salary, perks and other fancy things, he might not be the one for you.
Now I would not be biased that this candidate is jumping jobs habitually. He might be jumping because of a host of reason such as looking for ideal employer, good job description or a challenging work environment. Try to find out the reason. If you are satisfied that you can provide the right environment, you may invite him to work for you.
Attitude is everything. You can ask him to tell you about the tricky situations he faced while on the jobs before and how he handled them. Ask him the reasons why he acted like he did in those situations. This can help you make a profile of his personality and judge him better
Is he joining you because you are offering a better salary? What are the prospects that he will not leave you as he finds another better paying job? It is not easy to ask questions on a hypothesis but an intelligently worded question can provide right answers.
You cannot say that your interview process can give you perfect candidate. You should look at a candidate that suits in most of your criteria. However, if he turns out to be not so good, don’t beat yourself up. Learn from the situation and do better next time.
