In modern corporate world communication is one way street.

Communication is not a one way street

Communication essentially means that we not only talk and express but allow others to talk and express themselves.

It also means that we keep our ears open and concentrate what others are saying. Many a times listening skills are hostage to speaking skills . When management appreciates speaking up, listening takes a back seat.

Many a times, people are promoted when they have great communication skills ( i.e. speaking). The world places an emphasis on oratory than on listening and understanding.

If you have a team that has both speakers and listeners, you would see that speakers take up most of the time. I always prodded listeners to become temporary speakers and I was amazed by their point of view.

People are scared of expressing their points of view but it does not mean that they don’t have any. Sometimes listening is better than knowing. The idea is to create an environment where we can speaker to keep quite for some time while we all listen to listeners.

Agreed buddy. There is a saying which goes this way – To speak is to sow, To listen is to reap. And I think it is very true. The same should be practiced by the individuals no matter whether you are in the corporate or anywhere else. Great post!

Very nice point. Thank you. A good listener can be a good speaker just as a good reader can be a good writer. It will never work the other way around.
