"Older people sit down and ask, 'What is it?' but the boy asks, 'What can I do with it?'." - Steve Jobs
The wisdom is that to learn something look up to your elders, look up to the successful bizmen ( mostly older ) or senior. Since they are at the top , they must be doing something right.
The problem with this argument is that there is a tendency to leave out big set that we can learn from: younger generation.
While there are advantages to learning from older generation ( as they are more successful ), learning from from younger generation has a few of its own.
When we are young, all we can look is up, towards the seniority/age chain. Then we grow a little older and realize that many things we did were right, when we were young ( wrong too but then older people do that too). While there would be many telling us to learn from older generations, there are hardly any voices telling us to learn from younger generation which I believe is incorrect.
Here are a few things, I learned from younger generation.
The important thing is not to loose that feeling of excitement when we fail and keep on working on things we like .
Even though this might not be good always but we do have wisdom of years to keep us on track.
Most of the time, it is the youngsters, who are excited about trying out new things. Older people are more set in their ways. Slowly we see that we experiment less, discover less and learn less.
Most youngster want to make an impact on the world. They want to prove their worth. Older people just would like a nice pay-check. Its not that they do not have strength to make things happen. The drive just gets lost because of everyday life.
Imagine a child continuously trying to repeat doing the same thing. If we adults do it, we are told that it is impossible to get different result by repeating same thing over and over. Well not true for kids.
They grow up and learn because they repeat things, enjoy doing them and learn from them.
They are more experimenting, more social and open to new ideas. All new revolutions in the recent times have been started by youngsters while the old try to keep their grip tight on status quo.
Youngsters love new ideas, that keeps them away from older way of doing things. That's how mostly younger people are involved in start-ups.
Older people just hate getting into groove. They have a feeling that learning something new is just pain. Youngsters are not worried about boredom and hard work. They just want excitement from what they are doing.
This is not to berate older generation but to bring out the anomaly in our society that we can learn only from the old. The younger generation too has a lot to offer , if we open our minds to them.
